State-Level Inauguration of National Road Safety Month
The State-level inauguration of National Road Safety Month 2026 was held on 22 January 2026
at the Mascot Convention Center, Thiruvananthapuram. The event was organised under the
leadership of the Kerala Motor Vehicles Department and was inaugurated by the Minister for
Transport of Kerala, Shri K. B. Ganesh Kumar, who emphasized the critical role of road safety in
development.
The Theme Presentation on “Cross Roads – Development through Road Safety” was delivered
by Mr. Johnson J. Edayaranmula, Executive Director, NRC-NCD. In his presentation, Mr.
Johnson J. Edayaranmula underscored the intrinsic link between public health, road safety and
national development. He emphasized that road traffic injuries are not merely transport-related
issues but a major public health and socio-economic concern, affecting productivity, healthcare
systems and family well-being. Drawing from evidence-based insights, he highlighted the
importance of preventive strategies such as safer road design, responsible road user behavior,
enforcement of traffic laws and inter-sectoral coordination.
Mr. Johnson J. Edayaranmula was also honored with an award from the Kerala State
Government for his immense contribution to road safety throughout decades of service. Shri. K.
B. Ganesh Kumar, Minister for Transport handed over the award in the presence of Mr. Nagaraju
Chakilam IPS, Transport Commissioner of Kerala. The session concluded with a renewed
commitment from stakeholders to strengthen collaborative efforts towards creating safer roads
and a safer future for all citizens.
